Teller County, CO, July 9, 2018– Since the beginning of the #ChateauFire on June 28th, Teller County Sheriff’s Detectives, along with arson experts from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, have been working tirelessly to determine the cause. The investigation reveals this fire, which consumed over 1,400 acres of habited and inhabited land and destroyed at least 8 homes and numerous outbuildings, was human-caused by leaving an unauthorized campfire unattended.
Three Colorado Springs residents have been charged with First Degree Arson (a class three felony) for their alleged roles in starting this destructive fire. They are:
David Michael Renfrow DOB 09/19/1994
Kegan Patrick Owens DOB 05/27/1999
A 17-year old juvenile male
The investigation continues so details will be limited at this time as other persons and charges may be added.
Teller County residents and tourists who may be camping in the area are reminded that we are still under a Stage III fire ban due to the dry and windy conditions. No open fires of any type are allowed in the unincorporated areas of Teller County. These arrests underscore the importance of obeying fire bans. Each person is facing 4-8 years in prison and a $3000.00 to $750,000.00 fine.
