Community Meeting Set For Woodland Park Municipal Golf Course

A community meeting is set for March 17 to outline the city of Woodland Park’s plans for the Shining Mountain golf course and overall development, located off Hwy. 67.

The meeting is tentatively scheduled to occur at the Shining Mountain Golf Course clubhouse facility that evening.

The city took over as owners of the former Shining Mountain course and property, including the two-story clubhouse, the 18-hole championship course, several disc golf courses and a considerable amount of open space, last fall.

In a previous article in TMJ News, Councilman George Jones, who will soon assume the mayoral position, stated that everything is on schedule for an opening in late spring. Typically, the course opens in early to mid-May. Jones stressed that a considerable amount of behind the scenes work is occurring, such as intensive cleaning of the clubhouse facility.

These same reports were stressed again during a recent open panel discussion with U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper at the Ute Pass Cultural Center.   City leaders reaffirmed that everything is on schedule pertaining to the opening of Shining Mountain.

Hickenlooper praised the city for their acquisition, saying that similar open space deals like this in Denver worked quite well. Besides his current role as Colorado’s U.S. senator, Hickenlooper previously served as Denver’s mayor and the state’s governor.

Requests for proposals for various management aspects of the course and development management were due on Feb. 20, according to recent reports.  The city is mulling a variety of options for the management of Shining Mountain from both the golf course and clubhouse side of the operations.  Initially, the city indicated it would be running the golf course operations in a status quo manner but would make more significant changes in the future.

In comments TMJ received from a recent golf course update article, many respondents expressed anticipation and optimism regarding the city’s ownership status of Shining Mountain.  At the same time, several recreation buffs outlined concerns over the condition of the course and the rates that were charged last year.

Shining Mountain, which opened in late 1994, has featured quite a storied, colorful history.

More details regarding the forthcoming meeting will be available on the city’s website and Facebook page.
