CC/V American Legion Post 171
The Victor-Cripple Creek American Legion Post 171 respectfully retired 580 American flags that had faithfully served their mission.
This was the final ceremony of the process that began on Flag Day when the Post, youth leaders, and the Victor Elks Lodge 367 held a joint ceremony in Victor to describe the history of the flag and pay respect via a retirement ceremony.
Three hundred thirty of those soiled and tattered flags were collected during the past year in the community flag deposit box on the porch of the Post’s facility at 400 East Carr Avenue in Cripple Creek. The other 250 smaller flags were those used by the Post to decorate the veterans’ graves at Cripple Creek’s Mt. Pisgah Cemetery and the Sunny Side Cemetery in Victor. Two gross (288) new smaller flags were ordered in preparation for next year’s placements.
The Post leadership recently destroyed the 580 unserviceable flags in a dignified way by safely burning them in coordination with the Cripple Creek Fire Department after the local burn ban was lifted.
