On April 8, 2025, Senate Concurrent Resolution 25-001, authored by Teller County Sheriff Jason Mikesell, will be presented before the Colorado State Senate. SCR25-001 exempts from taxation a percentage of the actual value of a former or currently serving first responder’s primary residence. The percentage is determined by the number of years the first responder has served. This exemption would apply to firefighters, emergency medical service providers, law enforcement officers, and dispatchers. The purpose of this bill is to assist first responders to allow them to live in our communities, which will bolster recruitment and longevity within our volunteer and full-time fire districts and stations, health service (EMS and paramedic) districts, and Sheriff and Police jurisdictions.
As a Senate Concurrent Resolution, SCR25-001 would create an amendment to the Colorado Constitution. As such, it will first be presented to the State Senate and House of Representatives for passage and then be sent to the voters of Colorado for final approval.
