Woodland Park City Council Removes Voter-Approved Sales Tax Revenue from the Woodland Park School District

The following is a press release submitted by the Woodland Park RE-2 School District

During a special meeting today, the Woodland Park City Council unanimously voted in favor of Emergency Ordinance 1493, effectively removing the 1.09% sales tax funding from the Woodland Park School District (WPSD). This tax revenue was approved by voters in November 2024, who voted by a significant margin to retain this tax.

The district is deeply disappointed by the City Council’s action, which undermines the will of the voters and excessively strains the resources of WPSD. This funding has been essential in supporting educational excellence, staff retention, and programs that directly benefit students. Losing this revenue threatens the hard work and dedication of teachers, staff, administrators, students, and community members who have tirelessly supported the district’s mission.

“We are extremely disheartened by the council’s decision to overturn what our community decisively supported at the ballot box,” said Superintendent Ken Witt, “This funding has played a critical role in advancing the success of our schools, and its removal will have a profoundly negative impact on our operations.”

As the full impact of this decision unfolds, the district remains committed to transparency. The district will keep staff, families, and the community updated on what this means for WPSD moving forward.
