TMJ Interviews Grammy Award Nominee and Performer David Arkenstone

Award-winning Recording Artist Kicking Off Holiday Tour in Pikes Peak Region and Three-State Tour
Rick Langenberg

Five-time GRAMMY ® Award Nominee David Arkenstone, renowned for a variety of musical styles and the release of 50-plus albums, not to mention some memorable performances, television theme songs and impeccable musicianship, takes the stage at 8 p.m. on December 4 at Lulu’s Downtown in Colorado Springs with the highly anticipated return of A Winter’s Eve with David Arkenstone & Friends.  TMJ News had a chance to interview David ahead of his tour. We highly recommend you check out the show, offering a great way to kick off the holiday season. Here are a few highlights of our conversation with David Arkenstone:

TMJ: What can people expect from your upcoming Holiday tour in Colorado, and what will be some of the highlights?

DA:  Expect a fun evening and lots of musical holiday cheer! This is a wonderfully talented band who bring their passion and virtuosity every night to the stage. We play many songs people know and love reimagined, plus some of my winter-themed music. We also do an ‘unplugged’ set at the front of the stage where things are a bit more intimate and personal, which is always a favorite part of the concert for the band and the audience.

TMJ: Have you toured the Pikes Peak region and Colorado much in the past, and anything that stands out from earlier performances?

DA: This is our third year bringing our winter tour to Colorado, and we are so excited to be back in Colorado Springs. Apart from the staggering beauty to be seen as we travel around the state, I am always impressed by the caring, enthusiastic audiences at our shows.

TMJ: How has your musical style progressed over the last few decades?

DA: I think I’ve become better at illustrating through music, whatever I have in my head. The craft part of what I do has become more refined in all the genres I explore musically.
TMJ: Could you briefly elaborate on the genre of the music of David Arkenstone (we have heard a wide range of descriptions, from Celtic to New Age to Neo-classical)?
DA: Well, all those descriptions are accurate! It’s hard to pin down as I love to play so many styles, and it all kind of comes out through my own ‘filter’ and becomes my genre-defying style. I’ve heard my recent release Quest For The Runestone described as “New age cinematic rock.” And I’m thrilled that fans love my music.
TMJ: How have the crowds reacted to your shows, and any changes you have noticed in the types of people viewing your concerts?

DA: The crowds have been especially appreciative in Colorado. I believe it’s the winter atmosphere combined with our music that lights them up, and everyone seems to be in a festive mood. The only changes really that I’ve noticed is that more and more folks are coming out to see us, and they are bringing along their friends and families to share in the fun. There’s a real cross section of young and not so young at our concerts, from those that have discovered my epic orchestral gaming music in World of Warcraft to those that bought my first album, and I’m grateful that the performance seems to resonate with everyone.

TMJ: Anything additional you would like to add?

DA:  We can’t wait to share the music with Colorado again this year! We will be performing several songs we’ve never played live before. I think it will be the best tour yet. I like to keep it fresh. It’s always exciting for us just to be on stage; it’s what we were made for.
