It’s onto Week Two in the world of NFL Madness, and hopefully, the year of a Denver Broncos’ comeback. (Of course, we say that every year).
Game time Sunday is 2:25 p.m., as Empower Field at Mile High hosts the mean and gritty Pittsburgh Steelers. This is a not-to-miss showdown against two teams that plain and simply don’t like each other. And then to top off the already tense atmosphere, the game marks the return of former Bronco failing quarterback and “wannabe-king” Russell Wilson, who is taking the snaps now for the Steelers.
Plus, this represents Bo Nix’s first official home start for the Broncs in a real game, which is a biggie. Bo is the first rookie quarterback to get the starting QB nod since Mr. John Elway. No pressure Bo, as you will be watched by close to 100,000 fans at Mile High and then must grapple with 100s of thousands of onlookers at area sports bars, homes and more, including some rowdy fans from Teller County, not known for their sentiments of sympathy.
So, folks you may want to time that trek to the mountains this weekend in a fashion that you can take in the game. The Vegas line, as mentioned by TMJ writer Trevor Phipps, is 2.5 points in favor of the Steel City. But this year, the oddsmakers are really frowning on the Broncos, after several years of giving then the benefit of the doubt. On a regional level, columnist and Colorado sports wiz Woody Paige is giving a big edge to the Broncos, but that opinion is mostly tainted by his less than favorable opinion regarding Russell Wilson. TMJ insiders are favoring the Broncs, but by super-thin margins.
Historically, this has been a great match-up, especially in the former heyday years of the Broncos, when they actually partook in the playoffs. It got so bad at times that former Steeler coach, now an NFL commentator, Bill Cowher, was told rather bluntly that if he came running onto the field during game time in apparent acts of excitement, he would get tackled by the Broncos and end up in a hospital. The good old days. In essence, Cowher used to play big head games with former Bronco coach Mike Shanahan.
Enough, enough of our pre-game gibberish. Now, the fun part.
If you are looking for a great place to take in the game, don’t forget McGinty’s Wood Oven Pub in Divide, the sponsor of our fine NFL Page and Broncos’ preview. McGinty’s, with their sports bar setup and winner of many Best Of awards in the Teller High Country, offers a prime opportunity to view nearly all of the NFL games and partake in some great game food and drink specials. McGinty’s also sports a loyal group of Bronco and Steeler fans, promising a great atmosphere for this match-up.
From personal experience, their award-winning Bloody Mary’s and special draft are quite a treat
Enjoy Week Two.
