The classic American dish better known in Teller County as “Da Burger” is popular both due to its tastiness and its convenience. People can eat burgers while driving, while standing up, or enjoy one while eating out.

The convenience of the delicious sandwich also makes it a favorite for people who are gambling. All of the casinos in Cripple Creek offer some sort of food option and one of their most popular dishes is… you guessed it, the burger.

This week TMJ is going to explore all of the famous burgers that come from restaurants, casino-wise. In our second annual competition, TMJ added a special category to its Best Burger of the High Country contest, aimed at crowning the ultimate Cripple Creek casino burger king. Remember, voting is now open for the next few weeks.  Casting your tally is as easy, as you simply go to Mountainjackpot.com, click on a special banner, and fill out a short ballot.

Mid City Grill: Century Casino

The Mid City Grill is a local favorite eatery that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Along with its large menu filled with appetizers, sandwiches and entrees, the grill offers a selection of burgers as well.

The restaurant offers a build your own burger option as well as some specialties. Patrons can order a traditional patty melt or a California Burger with pepper jack cheese, guacamole and crispy bacon.

Also on the menu is a Western Burger that comes covered with Sweet Baby Ray’s BBQ sauce, cheddar cheese and a crisp onion ring.  For those wanting something different, they can choose the Mountain Man that is made with a unique blend of elk, venison, antelope, boar, and bison.

McGills’ Pint and Platter: McGills Casino

This eatery prides itself as being the only Irish Pub in Cripple Creek. People can sit at the bar or the dining room and enjoy a meal along with a cold draft beer.

The Pint and Platter is one of the only places in town that offer Guinness on tap for people to wash down their meal. Their menu gets changed and updated frequently to satisfy the taste buds of their customers.

The eatery is known for having one of the city’s best burgers as well as plenty of other tasty entrees. And according to former TMJ newspaper distributor Lynn Phipps, it has the best French onion soup around.

Dynamite Dick’s: Midnight Rose Casino

This restaurant located on the upper level in Midnight Rose, is open every day and it is known as being a local favorite. It is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and it offers separate menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

One thing that sets Dynamite Dick’s apart from other casino restaurants is its view from the dining room. Since it is located on the second floor, visitors can look out over the city’s main strip while eating.

During lunch and dinner time, the diner offers a delicious burger on their menu. Another perk is that they have curly fries as an option for a side.

Maggie’s Restaurant: Colorado Grande Casino

Located on the lower level of the Colorado Grande, Maggie’s is one eatery that sits away from all the sights and sounds of gambling. While there, visitors can dine in a quiet and intimate atmosphere.

The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and offers delicious choices for all three meal times. Their lengthy dinner menu boasts a large selection of fancy entrees, salads, and of course burgers.

All of their burgers are a half pound and are served on a grilled Kaiser roll. Their eight delicious versions of the sandwich are so tasty that the eatery was nominated several times for the best burger on the TMJ Facebook page.

Lombard’s: Double Eagle Casino

This restaurant sits on the lower level of the casino and is a good place to get a quick bite to eat while trying to strike it rich on slot machines. The eatery is open all day long and it boasts yummy food items for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The restaurant offers good service and the food almost always comes out fast. Their menu has a little bit of everything on it, including sandwiches and other entrees.

During their lunch rush, the burger is definitely the most popular item seen leaving the kitchen. Their burger comes with a choice of different cheeses and a variety of toppings and side options.

Joe’s Route 67 Diner: Wildwood Casino

Joe’s is Wildwood’s main eatery that offers all three meals people need in a day. And, some of their breakfast items are served all day long.

Their lunch and dinner menu are extensive as they offer a plethora of sandwiches, entrees, appetizers and a “lighter side” menu. They also serve a variety of half pound burgers on either a pretzel or Brioche bun.

Patrons can choose to build their own burger from a list of toppings and there is even a veggie burger option. Those wanting to try different versions of the classic sandwich can order The Diablo Burger that is a little on the spicy side, or one with peanut butter and bacon.

Woody’s Sports Bar and Grill: Wildwood Casino

Woody’s is located on the opposite side of the casino from Joe’s and is one of the best sports bars in town. Patrons can enjoy a meal and a cold brew while they watch their favorite sporting events on one of the bar’s giant screens.

And, now that sports betting is legal, gamblers can eat and drink at Woody’s while betting on the games they are watching. Many local gamblers have praised Woody’s as being the best sports bar in the region.

Their menu consists of several items geared to the sports bar scene such as appetizers, pizza, and sandwiches. They have eight burger options on their menu including their slopper which is served open face, smothered in green chili, and topped with cheese and sour cream.

Johnny’s Restaurant: Johnny Nolon’s Casino

This eatery is one of the only in town that offers their food 24 hours a day. And, their dining room is open from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day with a late night menu being offered Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to midnight.

The menu features a wide variety of dishes including sandwiches, steaks, pasta, and seafood. They have a special late night $2 comp menu and they serve breakfast all day.

Along with their lengthy sandwich menu Johnny’s also offers two different Black Angus burgers. Patrons can enjoy their Classic Burger or the Wrangler that comes with American cheese, Swiss cheese, BBQ sauce, bacon, and a jumbo onion ring.

Home Café: Bronco Billy’s Casino

The Home Café is probably best known by locals as a prime spot to get breakfast after a long night of gambling. Their breakfast menu is served all day and they have several reasonably priced, delicious items.

Their dinner menu offers a large selection of entrees, salads, sandwiches, and appetizers. Another perk to eating at the home café is that it is known as being one of the fastest restaurants in Cripple Creek.

On their sandwich menu the Home Café offers Rudy’s Famous Burger. Patrons can order a single or a double that gets grilled to their choice of temperature and served on a pretzel bun.
