The city of Woodland Park will host two-time Paralympic Gold Medalist Shawn Morelli on December 1 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at 220 W. South Ave (right next to city hall).
Morelli will be available for photos with her bicycles and gold medals. This will occur about a half-hour before the regularly scheduled city council meeting.
Morelli competed in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro games in September. She brought home gold in the Track Cycling, 3,000 m Individual pursuit and the Road Cycling Women’s Time Trial.
Morelli is a U.S. Army veteran and her first competition was at the 2010 Warrior Games. While deployed as an engineer officer in Afghanistan in 2007, Morelli was seriously injured by an improvised explosive device. Neurological damage resulted in brain trauma, muscle spasms and blindness in her left eye.
Woodland Park, through City Manager David Buttery, has established a relationship with Ft. Carson’s 4th Engineer Battalion. Morelli’s husband, Lt. Col. Carl Dick, is the 4th Engineer Battalion’s commander. Buttery closely followed the Paralympic events, and is thrilled to welcome Morelli back to Woodland Park.
“We would love to have the City of Woodland Park join us on December 1 to congratulate Shawn on her amazing accomplishments and support her continuing athletic pursuits,” said Buttery
