The Arts Uprise Will Rise at Regional Theater

Millibo Art Theatre (MAT)

The response to what’s happening to our country right now can take many forms.

But silence is not an option. That’s the feeling of the actors, artists, playwrights, songwriters, and poets behind The Arts Uprise Resistance Theatre, which will return to the Millibo Art Theatre (located in Colorado Springs, 1626 S. Tejon Street) Jan. 16-18 for their fourth production. Some of the best playwrights, actors, directors and poets will ply their talents to entertain and inspire the resistance movement.

All of the writers and performers in The Uprise work pro-bono to raise money for organizations being defunded. This one will raise money for the MAT and Rocky Mountain PBS.

What is the Arts Uprise?

It’s both a movement and an invitation – a movement to express what we feel about this moment in America, and an invitation to other creatives to make their own Uprise. Uprise began in January, 2025, with a meeting of mostly theater people at the Manitou Art Center. It began with a collective need, a collective rage, a collective drive to DO SOMETHING. The need to channel our creative expression to both keep ourselves sane and to provide some comfort to others who feel the same way. One of the concerns at this initial meeting centered on the obvious question: “Aren’t we just preaching to the choir?”

Yes we are. But you know what? Our choir has been taking a beating this past year, and they could use some comfort, some laughs, some insights and some entertainment. Although still an active local movement, in November The Uprise joined a nationwide “Fall of Freedom” movement, a coordinated effort to create anti-authoritarianism productions throughout the United States.

Noted playwright and screenwriter Lynn Nottage, described it as an “urgent call to the arts community to unite in defiance of authoritarian forces sweeping the nation, activating a nationwide wave of creative.
