Woodland Park School Board Candidate Opposes “Sexuality Education”

Dear Editor:

I am Norm Michaels, a Christian and a Conservative, running for the Woodland Park (RE-2) School Board (of Education)

Someone recently asked me whether I support or oppose comprehensive sexuality education, including LGBQT health and relationship information, in public schools K to 12?   The part-two question was “What are your positions regarding age appropriateness, curriculum transparency, and opt-in or -out policies?”

I oppose sexuality education, period.  Sex education has been part of public education for at least the past ninety years.   Sex education is not about sexuality.

Many parents are duped by the term “Sex Education”, when in today’s world, it is actually “Sexuality Education”.   Sex Education is not about “Sexuality”.  Sex Education focuses mainly on the biological and physical aspects of sex: reproduction, anatomy, puberty, contraception, and prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs). These are often taught from a health or science perspective.   In my opinion, sex education should be limited to ‘abstinence-focused approaches’.

Sexuality Education covers sex education topics but goes far beyond them.   It includes discussions of relationships, consensual sex, use of condoms, sexual orientation, gender identity, and affirming same-sex relationships.

I support only sex education as described above, and I believe in complete curriculum transparency with ‘opt-in’ policies approved by parents.   You will notice that I did not say, ‘Opt-Out’, but ‘Opt-In’.

Do not forget to vote on November 4.
