Dear Editor:
Editor’s Note: The following editorial/correspondence was submitted by the Teller Rifles organization, who host a variety of public forums regarding gun rights and teach self-defense and marksmanship classes. It follows a meeting, hosted by the group in Cripple Creek, which dealt with a slew of state proposed gun control bills. The meeting featured special presentations by the county commissioners and Sheriff Jason Mikesell.
We wanted to share an important update about local law enforcement efforts in Teller County
Sheriff Jason Mikesell recently outlined his approach to immigration enforcement, making it clear that his office is not conducting raids or rounding up undocumented individuals at random. Instead, the focus is on criminals who threaten public safety. His department is working with ICE to hold accountable illegal aliens who commit crimes in our community.
Why This Matters to Teller County Residents:
- Public Safety First – The Sheriff’s Office is prioritizing the removal of criminals, not law-abiding individuals
- Recent Arrests & Ongoing Investigations – Four illegal aliens were recently charged with crimes in Teller County like forging state documents and larceny, and one is now being sought in connection with a murder case.
- No Unnecessary Targeting – Law-abiding residents, regardless of immigration status, are not the focus of this effort.
- Efficient Use of Resources – This approach ensures local law enforcement efforts are directed where they matter most.
- Keeping Our Community Secure – Cooperation with ICE helps prevent repeat offenses and reduces criminal activity in our area.
Sheriff Mikesell has made it clear: if you see something, say something. Keeping Teller County safe requires all of us to stay aware and report suspicious activity to law enforcement. We believe a well-informed and well-prepared community is a stronger community. Staying engaged in local issues, supporting law enforcement efforts, and looking out for one another helps keep Teller County a safe place for all of us.
Thank you for taking the time to stay informed.
