It’s onto Week Five in the world of NFL Madness and what locals were hoping would finally become the year of a Denver Broncos’ rebound. So far, that wish hasn’t materialized too well. But alas, the season is young and we got a dandy this Sunday, as the Broncs Square Off against the Evil Empire itself, The Raiders, at Mile High.
So, hold onto your seats or beverages of choice, as the Raiders, whether they reside in Vegas (like they do now, or LA previously), are still the slummy, sleezy, crooked and hated Oakland Raiders, in the minds of local football fans.
Game time for Raider Day is at 2:05 p.m. on Oct. 6. Hopefully, some the bugs will get worked out in the Bronco offense from the opening games, and Rookie Quarterback and Captain Bo Nix will get more comfortable and exhibit the traits he demonstrated in the pre-season period. Otherwise, the consequences could get ugly in the battle against Raider Nation, and we could get mud on our face that can’t get removed.
These teams plain and simply don’t like each other. This rivalry was so intense in past years that former Bronco coach Mike Shanahan once had one of his quarterbacks hurl a ball at the face of former Raider owner Al Davis, in an act of spite during a warm-up session. (Shanahan was once fired by Davis and reportedly was stiffed several hundred thousand dollars by Davis, known affectionally by their fans as “Uncle Al.”) Locally, in one of our fine and hearty drinking establishments, two hard-core fans, one a Raider and another a Bronco buff, regularly bet their scalp on the outcome of this contest, with an enthusiastic barber set up to devour the hair of the loser. All doors were locked to prevent any escapes from the loser of this epic feud. The good old days of Bronco/Raider magic.
If you are looking for a great place to take in the game, don’t forget McGinty’s Wood Oven Pub in Divide, the sponsor of our fine NFL Page and Broncos’ preview. McGinty’s, with their sports bar setup and winner of many Best Of awards in the High Country, offers a prime opportunity to view nearly all of the NFL games and partake in some great game food and drink specials. McGinty’s also sports a loyal group of Bronco fans and some enthusiastic cynics too.
Overall, it is a great game atmosphere. Additionally, McGinty’s sports a friendly staff and has food entrees just made for Bronco football. It also is a prime spot for Thursday night games, which aren’t easily available to most fans, and college ball.
And if Bronco football is not to your liking on Sunday, the evening game will feature Cowboys against the Steelers in the Steel City. Not a bad little tussle there as the Terrible Towels will be waving like crazy. Monday night football is a big winner too with Chiefs and Saints duking it out.
Enjoy Week Five.
