For those who may not know it, the Monte Cristo Sandwich has become famous across the country for the last century for its unique blending of breakfast and lunch dishes.
Although every chef these days seems to put their own take on the staple dish, the traditional meal consists of a ham and cheese sandwich either dipped in egg and pan fried, or battered and deep fried.
The American origins of the dish can be traced back to the 1920s, but many say versions of the sandwich were being prepared overseas in France way before that. The Monte Cristo became famous in Southern California in the 1960s when Disneyland really put it on the map.
The sandwich has since become a staple on the menu at the national restaurant chain Bennigan’s. But for those who don’t want to take the drive to find one of the franchise eateries, Munchie Cottage in Divide has now placed their version of the Monte Cristo on their menu.
Their version of the famous sandwich is more like the egg-dipped and pan-fried version with powdered sugar sprinkled on top. Therefore, the Munchie Cottage take closely resembles the original that made it to the states in 1923 and was coined a “French Toast Sandwich.”
“Indulge in a flavor-packed combo at The Munchie Cottage!” The coffee shop/eatery stated in a social media post. “Our Monte Cristo sandwich, served with crispy chips, is the perfect mix of sweet and savory. Pair it with our refreshing Cherry Hibiscus Sparkling Tea for a meal that’s as delicious as it is satisfying.”
Along with The Munchie Cottage’s wide variety of baked goods and hand-prepared coffee drinks, they are now expanding their menu to really offer something for everyone. If coffee isn’t someone’s first choice for a morning beverage, the Cottage also has a large selection of herbal teas.
“Whether you’re craving the classic taste of Earl Grey, the bold flavor of Irish Breakfast, the fruity notes of Raspberry Black, or the refreshing essence of Gunpowder Green and Spearmint Herbal, we’ve got a brew for every mood. Sip, relax, and enjoy!” The Munchie Cottage said in another post.
Being one of the newer eateries in the Ute Pass region, The Munchie Cottage has really made a name for themselves as a place to stop while trekking through Divide.
