A Landmark Achievement Recorded For Powell Chiropractic and Wellness Center

Forget hitting the card tables and slots in Cripple Creek for big-time gambles or wagering bets on new development projects.
According to the frequent used cliché in the Teller high country, the biggest local gamble could amount to owning and running a business in Woodland Park for several decades. Not many area businesses can tout this accolade, especially in staying in the same spot for 30-plus years.
This landmark achievement was reached late last month by Dave Powell, owner and head operator of the Powell Chiropractic and Wellness Center, located at 490 Rampart Range Road. Recently, this accomplishment was celebrated by “Dr. Dave,” a nickname he has borne (whether he likes it or not) for several decades with veteran staff members, Jeannie Valesey and Maria Justice, who have worked for Powell for lengthy periods themselves.
In an amazing track record, Powell Chiropractic crossed the finish line in late June in serving the Woodland Park area for 35 years.
“I am now the old guy on the block,” quipped Powell, in describing his amazing longevity in Woodland Park. “When I started, I was the youngest chiropractor in town. That is not the case now. I am definitely the old guy.”
His chiropractic services, and overall fitness assets, are well appreciated as Dr. Dave has captured the gold in commanding fashion in TMJ’s annual “Best Of the Teller High Country” championship as the region’s top chiropractor for a number of years. He also was awarded a similar title this year in the Pikes Peak Courier newspaper.
Powell, whose wall is adorned with many degrees and certificates from a variety or colleges and educational institutions, admits the area has definitely changed.
“I can remember when I started, this was a pretty small town. There were some people that rode their horses, when they came to see me. I would pretty much see the same small group of people.”
Now, he admits the growth and changing dynamics of the town, with a mega bible college, high-stakes gambling in Cripple Creek, and a spree of development activity throughout the county, and a much more mobile population, have changed his business environment.
He cites the variety of clientele as one factor that really stands out over the last few decades.
But stability is one theme that has dominated his chiropractic services, with employees that have become an integral part of the Powell Chiropractic family. Jeannie, for example, has worked for Dr. Dave for 22 years, starting initially with him when he worked in Colorado Springs. Maria Justice, meanwhile, has been with Dr. Dave for a decade.
The addition of a gym also helped to further give his business an added niche.
This is part of Dr. Dave’s pro-fitness philosophy, an attitude that he carries with him throughout his professional and personal life. Powell is an active outdoorsman, who regularly enjoys camping, biking, motorcycle riding, fishing and more. He has been known for taking extensive cross-country trips. Recently, he even made an ambitious motorcycle trek to get one of the more up-close looks available at the eclipse.
But unfortunately, Mother Nature didn’t cooperate.
“It was a great ride, but I didn’t see much of the eclipse,” said Powell, who definitely is known for his witty sense of humor. He also regularly frequents his own gym, which features a hefty amount of equipment and has gained much popularity over the last few decades. Through the vast amount of his time in Woodland Park, Powell Chiropractic has been located in the same location.
Dr. Dave also regularly attends to the needs of TMJ News operators, a group not exactly known for their healthy lifestyles.
