On March 10 and 11, the Woodland Park High School (WPHS) Track & Field team got their season started with a JV meet on Friday and a varsity meet on Saturday. Despite facing some challenges such as injuries, sick athletes, and basketball players still recovering from their extended season, the track team still managed to perform exceptionally well.
According to Coach Grier, “We haven’t even begun to train hard yet and we still had
numerous personal records.” This is an encouraging sign for the team as they look forward to the rest of the season.
In the varsity meet, the WPHS track team had numerous top 5 finishes, including wins in the boys’ pole vault and boys’ 4×800. Jonny Sarmiento’s impressive vault of 11′ should have him locked into the state meet competition in May. Coach Grier also gave a special shoutout to the fans who braved the cold and windy weather to cheer on the team during the meet on Saturday.
The WPHS track & field team is off to a strong start, and they look forward to continuing to
build momentum throughout the rest of the season. Come cheer the team on at their next
meet on March 25 at Chaparral High School!
