Last Saturday Shining Mountain Golf Course kicked off its first disc golf tournament. They call it, “The Shining Mountain Fall Classic” and plan on making it an annual event.

Shining Mountain golf course is happy to expand their facility to include disc golfers as well as traditional golfers. The par 62, 18 hole disc golf course uses the same tees and greens, but the “hole” is a basket that the players try to get their disc into.

Travis Flett, an employee of New Belgium Brewery who is also one of the sponsors of the tournament said, “We are excited about the potential that disc golf offers for this course. The coordinators just thought it up not long ago and put it together really quickly and put it out for golfers to see and the tournament sold out in less than a week.”

Bruce Derington, who designed the course said, “The “Fall Classic” is presented by 2Deuces Disc Golf Club and Throw Colorado. It is our inaugural one day, non-sanctioned tournament on the brand new (permanent) Shining Mountain Disc Golf Course located on a golf course in beautiful Woodland Park, CO.”

The tournament hosted 72 men and women disc golf players from pro level to advanced amateur. Pro level players compete for a cash purse and amateurs for discs and tee shirts.

Player Eddie Wooters, co-owner of Throw Colorado, a Palmer Lake based disc golf store said, “This is a great course. It’s too bad they had this snow, but that just makes it that much more of a challenge.” Wooters, co-owner Shawn Welsh, and two other women who are pro level golfers for Wooters’ Team Throw Colorado participated in the event. Pro Women’s golfer, Katie Bosebutton said, “Team Throw Colorado will compete in 15 tournaments next year and I’m happy to see this new course added to the tour.”

Shining Mountain’s disc golf course is open to the public. Green fee is only $10 per player, $5 for students and military with an ID. Golf carts (weather permitting) are an addition $10 per day. You must be at least 16 years old and show a valid drivers license to rent a golf cart.

The disc course baskets are now a permanent fixture on the course and the pro shop has added all the gear a novice to pro disc golfer needs for sale.
