Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), in partnership with Pikes Peak Outdoor Recreation Alliance (PPORA) and the City of Colorado Springs, is proud to announce the return of Get Outdoors Day on Saturday, June 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Memorial Park on the northwest corner of Prospect Lake.
Join your local community in celebrating the great outdoors and discover new ways to enjoy the natural beauty of Colorado this weekend at Get Outdoors Day.
This free, family-friendly event aims to connect the community with the abundant outdoor recreation opportunities available in the Pikes Peak region. Attendees of all ages can participate in a variety of hands-on activities, including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, fishing, archery, rock climbing, and more. The event also offers educational experiences focused on trail maintenance, conservation, and the Leave No Trace principles.
“This event is an easy way for people of all ages to get a taste of the outdoors and get to know the organizations that support outdoor recreation for our community year-round,” Executive Director of PPORA Becky Leinweber “If you’ve always wanted to try something new but didn’t know how to get started, this day is for you!”
This event also coincides with “Free Fishing Weekend”, where people of any age can fish without a fishing license. To help kids get hooked on angling, CPW will hand out free fishing poles to the first 800 youth (17 and younger) that arrive at CPW’s giveaway station. The lake will be stocked prior to the event to help increase success for new anglers.

“Get Outdoors Day is about breaking down barriers to outdoor recreation,” said Travis Sauder, Assistant Area Wildlife Manager and CPW’s lead organizer of the event. “We want to inspire families to explore new hobbies, learn valuable outdoor skills, and foster a deeper connection with nature.”
The event will feature numerous local outdoor businesses and nonprofit organizations ready to introduce attendees to various activities and provide information on how to get involved in outdoor recreation. Additionally, the event emphasizes inclusivity, offering accessible activities and sign language interpreters to ensure everyone can participate.
Leinweber said, “From fishing to climbing to understanding the essentials of hiking or encountering wildlife, there’s something for everyone. PPORA is excited to co-host this annual event of fun outdoor activities geared toward beginners.”
Attendees are encouraged to bring sunscreen, water, and a sense of adventure. Food trucks will be available on-site for refreshments.
